Gladwell challenges the belief that social media can provide a social change, he sets that story by explain the history of the Greensboro sit-ins.  Addressing a society that is consumed by social networks Gladwell explicitly address his disappointment. He use descriptions of the Greensboro sit- ins and recent events to describe his idea.  By addressing the “Twitter Revolution” an comparing it to the civil rights movement Gladwell shows the difference between the two.  He address the question how does social media tie into activism.

Gladwell openly explain the events that took place leading to the Greensboro sit – ins and many events that took place during the civil rights movement.  He also describes the “twitter revolution” event that took place in 2009.  By describing the events he can relate back to the thesis of the paper.  He structures the text to give the reader an idea of how social change took place before social networks were invented.  He even goes father and give the reader an idea of what would have happen if Martin Luther King used social media networks to plan protest.  By describing the twitter revolution he challenges the effect that social networks had in the event.

Some of the evidence that Gladwell uses are interviews and first-hand accounts of the Greensboro sit-ins.  Using this evidence persuades the reader to support Gladwell thesis.  Explaining the events with actual accounts of what happen gives the reader a feeling that he or she can relate to. The evidence that Gladwell presents is very persuasive due to the fact that by helping the reader relate back to the main idea of the paper he persuade the reader to believe what Gladwell believes.

Gladwell generate interest by explain the events that took place during the sit-ins.  He also describe recent events that many of his readers could have taken place in.  Using recent events allows Gladwell to generate interest in his argument because it allows a larger span of readers to relate to the text.  Another strategy that the author uses is flashbacks. By jumping from the events that took place during the civil rights movements back to the recent events that took place during the twitter revolution Gladwell generate interest in the argument that he makes.

In conclusion Gladwell hopes that events that happen in the past can help us in the future.  He uses many different types of strategies to prove his thesis and gather interest in his augment.  By doing so he challenge many believes an openly explains the information he uses to support his thesis.

Artifact 1

In the article Apocalypse Now written by Edward O. Wilson he pleads with the Christian community for its help.  Wilson writes a southern pastor asking for the religious and science community to come together to save the world.  Wilson explains the beneficial factors if the two opposing sides united.  Agreeing to disagree Wilson ask to put their differences apart for the greater good.  Describing the different beliefs each community share Wilson explain both points of view.

Wilson main theme of his article is to agree to disagree.  Wilson calls on the opposing side that disagrees with everything he believes as a whole.  Wilson never undermines the other side but approach it with a fair understanding.  He understands that the religious and science community believe in two different styles an only ask for joining of the two. Wilson understands that the religious community has a strong upper hand in society.

Claiming the religious community has a strong advantage due to its worldwide acceptance and mass number of members.  Fear of paganism and other reason cause opposition in the support of biological conservation.   Wilson explains how many religious leaders have taken on the responsibility of protecting the earth.  Wilson makes a mental picture of the difference both communities share but he also paints a picture of how each need each other in order to exist.

The audience that I believe that Wilson is communicating to is the religious community. Not only because the letter was sent to a leader of the religious community but due to the langue of the article.  Wilson claims saving the environment isn’t in the hands of politicians but belongs to the two opposing sides.  I don’t believe that Wilson could sell his theory to a politician with this article.

Wilson implies the need for the religious community help to support biological conservation an article with similar themes would be an article written by Gladwell.  Both writers explain the need for assistance to save an important factor in human existence.   Even though Gladwell doesn’t try to save the world he explains the disadvantages of social networks in protesting.

Gladwell explains his disapproval of how social networks place in civil activism. By explain social events that took place without the help of social networks Gladwell shows the extinction of civil protest due to social networks. The theme in this article is similar to the one in Wilson.  Both writers are striving to save something that they feel is an important aspect in human life.

Both writers take sides on the issues that they addressing.  By stating both aspects of the viewpoints only Wilson shares a common ground with the opposing team.   Both argue that the events taking place now is damaging to the common good and well-being of society.  The writers explain what need to take place in order for events to change for the good or society.  By giving a positive outcome of what will happen if the present change both writers call for a change in the world.

Wilson and Gladwell both written articles that they felt would change society view on a two sided topic.  These articles can be used to help opposing sides come to a middle ground and come to terms to solve it.  While Wilson take a stand and call for the help from the opposing religious community, Gladwell calls for a stop in the use of social networks in civil activism.

Another article with similar themes would be George Orwell Politics and the English Language. Orwell explains the connection between politics and the English language in this article imposing that politicians use big words to stress little points.  Both writers themes express society as a whole being affected.

Refections of the Semester

Writing multiple drafts provided to be very helpful to me.  When writing a first draft I tend to miss some things such as grammar or addressing the prompt correctly.  When re-reading my work and completing multiple drafts I am able to fix the things that I have missed.  Writing multiple drafts also allow for me to add information that wasn’t included in the first draft.  It also allows a better understanding for the topic that I’m writing for.  When I write multiple drafts by the third drafts I feel that I have a better understanding of the topic at hand.  I believe that on the assignments that I achieved a low grade on it was due to no writing multiple drafts.  If I would have wrote more than one draft I would have had a better understanding of the topic and addressed it more clearly.  Also on the assignment that’s I misread the prompt writing multiple drafts would have corrected this problem before hand.  When writing my final paper I wrote many drafts.  Each multiple draft helped me include information where I seen fit.  It also helped me check the thesis of my paper and make sure that it went along with the theme of my paper.  The types of revision that I made for my final paper were mostly editing.  I cut a lot of things I felt wasn’t needed in my paper. I also added a lot of things that were needed in my paper.  I also checked grammar and for misspelling when editing my paper.  Another process I used when working on multiple drafts for my paper was re reading the prompt.  When I re reads the prompt and then read my paper I checked to make sure I was addressing every aspect of the prompt.  Posting my work online also helped me in this class a lot.  When posting my work online it allowed me to view others work and use theirs to address mine. If I became confuse about a writing assignment I would go look at my peers posted work to get a better idea of what mines suppose to look like.  Also posting my work online allowed me to gain feedback from different prospective.  Also when posting my work I always wanted it to be at its best due to the fact that not only was my peers going to see my work but members of the writers community also. I show my strengths as a writer when I provided detail information in my writing. I believe that I use my strengths in my final paper and provided in-depth detail about my topic but in my daily work in class I did an average job.   I didn’t want to go into too much detail in fear that I would end up giving too much information.  Writing for me is tricky because I never want to give too much information and never want to give to little information. In my film class these strengths became an advantage to me.  We must provide insight detail on movies that we watched.  This class I score almost perfect scores on my papers due to my ability to describe in detail the scene of the movie or film.   I believed that my skills as a writer have improved thought this semester. I was introduced to many different genres of writing and learn new skills from different writers.  I learned how to play with words to help get your point across to those who disapproval with it.  The writers and articles that we read thought the semester helped shaped my writing skills to a new level.  I don’t believe that I have mastered these new skills but next semester I plan on working on the skills I leaned in this class for future use. The ways that I struggled as a writer though this semester was addressing the prompts.  I would believe that I had an idea of what the prompt wanted but when I failed to address it in my writing. I plan on correcting this next semester by constantly reading the prompt to understand what it’s asking.  I also will ask the teacher for help if I don’t understand what the prompt is asking me.  One thing that I feel helped me improve as a writer would be our final project.  Our final project allowed me to research my topic, provide a thesis, and support a claim.  These all together helped shaped me as a writer.   I never knew how to approach a research paper and at first it seemed scary. But, when I started planning my research all the pieces began falling in place.  My research paper I believe is one of my best works this semester.  This paper allowed me to improve my writing by providing the challenge of supporting my argument.

The Golden age….

My topic is the effects of the great depression on Hollywood.  Some of the major points of interest that I have seen in my topic was the naming of stars.  I would have thought that stars would have been unknown during that time but I was wrong.  Many stars were able to come up in Hollywood and star in many roles involving some of Hollywood biggest stars. Another big topic of interest that keep reoccupying is the production of movie genres.  Many directors changed the mold and began creating many different movie genres.  Science fiction was created after the release of the epic film King Kong. This film appeared with special effects that views had never seen before.  We watch the original now and we realize how corny it is but that’s just how much film have progressed.  People seem to be interested in talking about the advancements that were made in the film industry during this time also.  Color and the invention of talkies films were created during this time.  The first color film was produced in 1915 when had many views at a standstill.  Movies before were always hand-tinted and never had a realistic look to them.  The first talkie film was the Jazz Singer and it forever changed the movie industry.  Many debate that the change in the film was beneficial to some and harmful to others.  Those who didn’t change with the times were left behind and forgotten.  Many new actors came on the scene with the invention of talkie films.  My take on the whole idea is that times change so people should also.  When doing my research and learning what many debated over I came to a conclusion.  Hollywood in the early 1920s and 1930s were setting its self-up for Hollywood now.  Many of the stars of Holly wood had people controlling their contracts and would never be allowed to do what stars do now but that doesn’t change much.  I believe the stars of before has set the stage for the stars of today.  Directors also, the steps they took to make advancements have benefited the directors of today.

Spoof of a Fan

Everyone is going crazy over the new twilight movie but surprisingly I’m not. It’s not that I don’t like the series I am the biggest twilight fan I know. I once bought a cup just because it had the cast from the second film on it. I have read all of the novels and patiently await the release of the newest book that got leaked. Surprising I have yet jumped in the car and made my way to spend money on my favorite series. Due to the fact of the over publishing magazines, the crazy stories that they come out with, and the way the fans are made to look in the recent spoofs of the film. I’m starting to think the entire series have become annoying. Don’t get me wrong I love the books but the movies have reached a point of ridiculousness. I am not bashing twilight in no such way gently expressing my dislike for the new approach the flim have taken. I believed that due to the competition with the Harry Potter series maybe these were attempts to keep up. Now that the last Harry Potter film have been released I starting to disagree with myself. The stars of the film each have their own fan base. The wolf pack is adored by teenage girls and myself. The vampire clan is the other side of the train adored by the other set of teenage girls who cannot make up their mind. Each fan base has their own “team” who they support. In the twilight world you’re either team Jacob or team Edward. Annoying as they are many spoofs have taken these so called “teams” and made them into over-craze teenage girls driven by hormones and rage. Maybe the marketing teams selected for the film have a master plan underway and want to keep the public in the dark. Maybe they decided on using the many spoofs that have been created about the film as advertisement. Whatever the case may be I dislike this new breed of twilight fan and refuse to be made to look like a crazy person.

Social Advancements REINVENTED

I totally disagree with myself about the argument that I proposed about Gladwell.  I wrote a journal supporting his idea that social media networks has no place in civil activism.  I strongly disagree with this idea and will explain how they are actual beneficial.  Social media networks are used to spread information across the globe.  Gladwell gives examples of the sit it’s that took place during the civil right movement.  Those would be inconstant with the times now but I’m pretty sure social media networks would have worked in that supporting the cause also.  I admit that social media networks can’t do everything.  There is need for people to become involved with their message. Gladwell argues that reducing the risk of harm reduce the attachment to the cause.  I disagree with this idea totally; social media networks reduce the risk of surfing but can have beneficial results.  Similar to the sit ins civil activism that take place over social media networks take crap also.  Millions of people are threating the same as the protesters in the civil rights movement.  With the internet being seen by million the likely hood to run into someone with opposing views is even greater.  Even though the risk is greater many still address problem and express their idea via the internet and by using social media networks.  The idea that social media networks disconnect people from the message is crazy. I disagree with the description of activism provided by myself and Gladwell. Social media provides as a message board for those who cannot stand and fight.  That who can’t fight doesn’t deserve not to have a voice.  I augured that activism isn’t describe about how many counterparts you can gain to like your idea.  Social media networks provides information to other who may not have an idea what’s going own.  Even though social media networks help provide organizations with large numbers of protests that doesn’t mean they have any emotional or social connection with the mission.  Social media networks can afford to be very beneficial to civil activism by providing a voice to those who cannot speak.

Disconnected

In the article Small Change by Gladwell he explains the sense of reasonability in civil activism.  Gladwell explain social chaining events that took place with or without the help of social networks.   Gladwell explains the events that took place leading up to the civil rights movement and the sit-ins that took place in Greensboro.  He also hypnotizes the effects of social networks during the times of the civil rights movement. By explain these events Gladwell clearly explain his distaste for social networks place in civil activism.

Reading Gladwell article the theme that seems to jump out is the disapproval of social networks.  He gives many examples of events that took place during recent times an judge the role that social networks had in the event.  I agree with Gladwell understanding of the subject selected.  I also share the belief that there is no room for social networks in civil protest.

Personal experiences along with Gladwell guidance’s led me to understand this reasoning.  A person cannot provide any type of help during a social revolution behind a computer.  During the civil rights movement many people put there life on the line for social change.  Many people were placed in jail or lost their live fighting for a real social change.  In order for one to suppose the cause they have to be willing to give for the cause.  Sitting behind a computer tweeting isn’t giving anything to the cause.

Gladwell stress an analysis on a problem that that many need to understand.  Social networks have had no role in any particular protest.  Even though information and messages can be sent out a lot faster than word of mouth social networks unattached the person from the cause their fighting for.  When a person is unattached from the cause that they are fighting for there is no reason for them to fight at all.

In conclusion Gladwell stress an important point that social networks have no reason to be involved in civil activism.  I agree with his understanding an support the idea that in order for a person to be connected to the cause that there fighting got they must have a connection to it first.  Without this connection there is no purpose of the person to even fight for the cause due to the fact there heart isn’t in it.

Friday night….

Its late Sunday night, I decide to surf the web to see if I can find anything better than what’s on TV. I decide to review the links on our English 104 homepage. Besides the English dictionary and helpful hints on writing I can’t find anything to help amuse me. Suddenly, a link catches my attention. I click it an see a video of a cartoon man drawing. As I read the description of the page I realize that this is an artist homepage. He goes by the name of Al Davison and he is creating a graphic novel. At this point I’m confused because the name of the link is Scott McCloud, who is this McCloud dude? I began to click random links and I see that he is a professional comic book maker. Cool…. Once I began to look around the site more I see that he have links to his inventors which teaches people how to create comics. Cooler…. He also have web comics that he made and update. I’m sold…. I end my night learning that comics can be written in the same format as essays. Can you say new favorite.
