“Encounter 4″ Reinvention of Intro Encounter, a more Informal approach…

Yes indeed, I have chosen to start speaking of my future and plans in the year of 2020. Why start speaking of my future in the year 2020, you might be asking yourself? Well, its simple the teacher chose that date and I simply have no option. If it were up to me i would have chosen to start speaking of my future now. I am currently a Finance major at the univeristy of Northern Illinois. My grades are pretty solid, a 3.0 and above gpa. Where I see myself in two years, is graduating. Yes, I said graduating. Is’nt that the goal in life? Having an education is a main priority and not forgetting a neccesity. We all have illusions of graduating finding a job and making money. The american dream/ihabitants of the United States have a mentality that life is about luxuries and life is emasured by the things we have. Well in my case that is wrong, a total fail. Life isin’t about the m,aterial things we have. For me life is about being happy and enjoying the presence of those around you, not forgetting that we are only temporary to this planet. I always ask myself, “what if by the time I graduate I dont find a job in my field”? What do I do then, right? Well life is short and why not enjoy it, volunteer, explore the world, go back to school? Well my plan for my near future is graduate in the next two/half years. Dreams dont usually come true right out of college, unless hired by a great company with maximum benefits, well the pay$$$. I have set up a back up plan. If I am not employed by the time I graduate I will get certified in using microsoft office, Leanr how to program computers and then after join the academy. I belive I am a great candidate to becoming a detective or a police officer. I oneday hope to save enough money and have my own car body shop, since I am obsessed with cars and the various looks. Why rewrite this blog? Well I didnt just rewrite it for no reason. I remixed it, we learned in class that “Everything get remixed”. True…just like life it should be spiced up, so dont be afraid to come out of your shell, but follow your heart accomplish your dreams dont let a derailing economy and opportunity put you down. Keep your head up, this is the land of opportunity for a reason…

Option 1 Audience and Genre

Writing a blog was a much needed change. What I mean by a much needed change is that I hate doing in class writing assignments. Writing a blog gave me more inspiration to write. For example while being in front of my computer screen at home listening to music gave me more ideas on what to write. I have a habit of listening to music when studying and doing math. When I signed up for this 104 English course, I had in mind that I had just signed up to some kind of portal that I would learn to hate. I am not a writer nor a scientist, so that’s why I have no passion to write or learn about any of the bio”logy” pertaining to science. Posting and commenting on blogs was a great way for me to argue my point and see others viewpoint on different subject matters. Blogging was much more convenient compared to doing in class journals/assignments. My college experienced and the writing aspect of English shifted into a different direction, one that felt very high tech and less aggravating. We had deadlines in which blogs had to be met along with various topics and that allowed me to take my time and write about something that interested me. For me, blogging felt as if I were posting to a social network account such as face book. The only difference was that I was forced to create a blog because of the class requirements that are needed for me to pass this course and meet the requirements.

This semester we encountered various genres of writing. These genres kept me from dropping this course, since I personally do not enjoy English composition. The various genres ranged from Encounters, which were blogs/posts we submitted online followed by reflections, articles, comments, peer reviews and journals. The reflection part of this course was pretty basic and was used to reflect on certain subjects that pertain to an individual. The articles were a form of traditional essay writing. The comments were usually posted to “gateways”. Furthermore, we also had in class journals which connected to readings prior to class. The expectations for each one of these genres varied. When writing encounters I analyzed certain topics and answered the question that was provided to me or elaborated on the ideas given for us to answer. Reflective writing was usually personal ideas and thoughts we had on subject matters such as The “Vagina Monologues”. The way I approach the audience expectations of being reflective was to write upon what this reading meant to me and how it was useful. There were various audiences and genres that needed to be written about, which I took upon to answer, according to the guidelines that had been set.

The strengths I see as a writer  are that I am very creative and unique. Another one of my strengths is the use of transitions. The way I went about exploiting my skills in my writing was in the encounters, article 2 and final project essay. My final project essay is a reflection of my ideas along with my creativity. A recreational park was made from recycled products at home. My writing has improved grammatically and the structure in what I write has been set. I usually don’t like double spacing writing and I hate the use of MLA formatting. I have learned at last how to cite sources along with the MLA requirements. One thing I did this semester that helped me improve was re writing my first article. Rewriting this article allowed me to catch my grammar mistakes and fix my run on sentences. Writing an introduction has always been my greatest struggle. The way I deal with this is by just starting at the body and working my way up until I have an idea for the introduction. What I have learned from this class is that I don’t really need to have a passion for something in order to accomplish it. English is a prerequisite that people need in order to communicate through writing along with verbal words. I will use my English/grammar skills when creating budgets in the finance field and other essays for procedures in business that need to be explained.

Final Research paper

Recreational Park

Recycling is an important matter that should be seriously dealt with. In today’s society people have stopped caring about the environment they live in, and started caring about life’s luxuries. The planet should be the number one priority in people’s life, because without it we wouldn’t be here. The lack of recycling and its importance has taken a toll on the planet. For example, wasted products such as plastic, aluminum, paper, and cardboard are products that are used in everyday life. As a result people should recycle these products because by recycling them they conserve energy, when not recycled, the materials go to waste and are dumped into the atmosphere.

Throughout our research we noticed that Northern Illinois University in DeKalb has made an attempt to recycle by putting recycling bins around the buildings. But very few or no information about their recycling methods have been posted on their website or library resource center. The town of DeKalb could benefit a lot from recycling, because a lot of aluminum, plastic and papers are wasted. This is a college town and therefore, the image should be to have a clean and healthy environment.

The City of Chicago spends more money on events that the city partakes in, such as the Chicago Marathon, The Taste of Chicago and Holiday parades. The city should be worrying more about how it looks and the quality of life the citizens are receiving, instead of their attractions. Furthermore, the City of Chicago should create a recycling program which enables them to reuse and recreate new products from wasted plastic materials along with aluminum and paper. The recycling program that Chicago currently offers is the “Chicago Recycling Coalition.”  We believe that people do not recycle because recycling bins cost money. Chicago also has a program which allows for businesses to recycle products and get rid of materials they don’t need. This program is called the “Chicago Blue Cart” program. This program also allows for businesses to create recycling procedures.

Finding all this research has brought to our attention the importance of recycling. Recycling is a much needed duty that very few care upon or strive to make a change in improving the atmosphere. As a result we decided to recycle our everyday products instead of wasting these materials that are very beneficial if reused. The products we chose to recycle where our water bottles, since the plastic is a very useful resource that can be reused to drink or make new plastic. Since I am a big hookah smoker, we decided to save up all the used aluminum used for the burning of the coal. We noticed that most cities and towns have programs that pay for the pound of aluminum. Aluminum is a resource that is very well recycled by some people because of the incentives that go along with. We also decided to recycle cardboard boxes from groceries and paper that came from newspaper articles we read. Styrofoam is also a product that is very well wasted, when one buys a new television Styrofoam protects it and then makes it to the dump. We saved up these materials for about three weeks and then we got a wonderful idea in which we decided to use all these materials and instead of trashing them. We made a miniature recreational park in which all the furniture and materials have been made from recycled materials.

We decided to make a recreational park, because since DeKalb is a town inhabited by students and small families, we believed that a park would benefit them. This park would be toxic free and made from 100% recycled products. We didn’t have the necessary resources to melt plastic and then mold it. What we had in mind making the pond and poles from recycled plastic, we used the label from the water bottles to make the water effect instead of painting it, so it wouldn’t eliminate the essence of the recycled materials. What our recreational park consisted of was fake/replica trees, benches, water fountain, a pond, rocks, solar powered light poles, and a see-saw.  We decided that these were the necessary things to attract people and they can feel like they are in a relaxing environment and not to feel overcrowded.

We first started with a cardboard box which signified the territory and the fencing along the park. The water bottles that we recycled were used as a walking tunnel. Our initial intention was to create slides and stairs from plastic, but the molding part was a failure not a success. There are so many plastic water bottles wasted in the planet that could benefit into new and upcoming plastics. The trees in our project were painted and made artificially from old recycled cardboard. The benches were made from reused Styrofoam and plastic to support the bottom of it.  The water fountain was made from plastic; all we did was cut off a water bottles tip and use that to contain water. What we used for rocks where an old workout Styrofoam mat we had lying around. The aluminum signified the solar powered light poles.

Therefore, this recreational park puts all of our research into a display that can be seen by many. We used products that people use in daily life and decided to recycle them and make something to show for it. Recycling is very important because it helps out the planet as a whole and adds a clean feeling to the environment. If we had the resources that big plastic makers had we could have created a slide for the park from all the plastic we recycled. After all the recycling and putting a recreational park we were left with a conclusion that this park would raise awareness in recycling and demonstrate the things that could be created from products that are usually disposed daily.

Identity…Self

Figuring out the importance of what the self means to each individual is important. After reading the essay by Ensler, it left me with a shocking truth. This truth traces back to knowing who one connects to and the value of the self. Everyone is different and therefore, there are many experiences that connect individuals to one another along with the world itself. Ensler proposes that for one to understand others, one must start by knowing the self and truly understanding the essence of the body and what it means.

“Me was always trying to become something, somebody. Me only existed in trying. My body was often in the way.” (Ensler) This quote shows Ensler’s journey and desire to find out what she meant to herself and what she was trying to become. Ensler knew that her life and experiences made her who she was, but she wanted to know more about herself and how she connected to the world. She states she was trying to become something, someone. What I believe she is trying to say here is that little by little she was becoming a product of her world.

The self is a very importance aspect to life. When one does not know who they are, and what they are here for, they are often lost. By being lost, what I am really proposing is that they do not seek the true purpose in life, which is feeling fully connected to one’s body, mind and soul. One must understand the self before feeling connected or connecting to others experiences along with giving advice of what the body means.

Ensler learns to understand other women’s bodies before she starts to feel the connection for self. She states “…I began to ask other women about their bodies—in particular their vaginas…” (Ensler) Ensler really wanted to know about others, and therefore, she creates the term vagina to basically go in and replace the self. Ensler believes that talking about other women’s vaginas will allow for the self discovery of the self. I believe that Ensler uses the term vagina in manner that every woman can connect to because they all have this body piece. Ensler uses this approach because if she were to use another term, it might single out certain women from feeling connected and seeking out the essence of her argument being seeking out who the self is and what it means. Ensler states that she did not always love who she was and the way her body had been formed, but she did understand that one must love the self. …I had moments of appreciation of my body, the way an abusive parent can sometimes have a moment of kindness”. (Ensler) It is true, Ensler did not always appreciate her body and therefore, connects it to how abusive parents can also have moments of kindness. In my opinion what I think she is trying to say here is that no one is perfect but the experiences are the ones that create one and bring the self to fullness.

It took time for Ensler to appreciate her body and fully discover herself. This lead to other people being interested in her stories and therefore, people started talking to her about their own stories “vagina”. Ensler states that she felt “Compelled around the world”. (Ensler) “And I have to tell you, there was always this moment where the women shared with me that particular moment when she separated from her body…” (Ensler) What I believe Ensler was saying here is that one must understand the body’s downfalls, because it will allow for the understanding of the self in a more complete way.

“Then I got cancer – or I found out I had cancer. It arrived like a speeding bird smashing into a window pane. Suddenly, I had a body…” (Ensler) This summed up Ensler’s life and her embodiment of self. Ensler knew that the body is a beautiful thing and should be taken care of, even when times seem tough, the body is a beautiful thing. Ensler had gone on a quest of seeking out who she was, what her body meant, along with what other women said their bodies meant. Well it was certain that this self, body, “Vagina” was not perfect and would be shaped into many things by life. Ensler also states that she knew, “…everything is connected, and the scar that runs the length of my torso is the markings of the earthquake.” (Ensler) Therefore, Ensler sums up her view on the self, everything is connected in a way that allows one to know the self and understand others.

“What I learned is it has to do with attention and resources that everybody deserves.” (Ensler) Ensler states this to get peoples mind to know that everyone’s life is not perfect, but of one fully understand the self it is a magnificent way to have gone upon life. She concludes her essay with a very powerful quote that puts her thought about knowing and seeking the self in place, “It was having a vision of the future and something to fight for, because I know this struggle isn’t my own.” (Ensler)  She couldn’t have said it better, we are all connected and everyone’s struggles are connected together because the world is one and we are life’s result.

We Call it Music What Do You Call it? “5th Encounter”

We Call it Music What Do You Call it?

In today’s society music is often criticized by many. Hip-Hop is a main target when talking about music becoming demeaning. In class I overheard a presentation of someone arguing that Hip-hop is very demeaning to woman. The artist this girl had mentioned was Common. Common is a very inspirational music writer and actor. Commons greatest musical hits have been, I used to Love her, Freedom Writers, I have a dream, along with Universal Mind Control. These songs are not demeaning to woman unless taken into the wrong context.

For example the song “I Used to Love her” by Common has been a song which has been analyzed and talked bad about. The song talks about Hip-Hop, not about woman. I used to Love her is talking about music/hip-hop not about a woman. The technique Common uses is very unique and creative. This song has made it on Hip-Hops all time top 100 music lists on “BET” and “VH1”. The message Common is trying to give to the people is that music is being destroyed and the image of music is being hurt. Common believes that music should be admired not critiqued and rappers should talk about life lessons not degrade woman or talk about how using illegal substances is cool. Music should be correctly analyzed before people fall in

What am I doing wrong? Answer= Your not helping out…the environment…your hurting it

The temperature is 110 degrees Fahrenheit; the temperature is above normal for a day in mid September. Johnny and Justin are outside next to their pool. They decide to clean the pool’s water by bleaching it out. Justin is a conformer and he is easily satisfied, on the other hand Johnny always wants it his way and never conforms. As Johnny jumps in the pool he complains that the water is not cold enough. Justin tries to convince him that it’s good enough, but Johnny disagrees and informs Justin that he will be dumping the water out and filling it with new water. As the pool is done being filled, Johnny complains of thirst and brings out water bottles from his fridge to share with Justin and quench their thirsts. Justin chugs his water bottle and gives thanks to God, in the meantime Johnny finishes three fourths of the bottle and just throws his bottle into the trash bin. Justin informs Johnny that he threw a bottle that still contained water in it. Johnny replies back with a negative attitude “so… my parents bought the water not God”. Justin stays quiet. Later on that afternoon they go to music shop and buy some music discs. As they are walking back home Johnny unwraps his cd and lets the plastic wrapping fly into the air. Justin puts his plastic wrap from the cd in a bag and tells Johnny “when I get home I am going to put this in our blue recycling bin”. Johnny as always responds with an indifferent attitude. The boys both go to their individual homes, but make plans about watching tomorrow’s show on “The Walking Dead” together.  They agree to meet each other by the park at 5p.m. As Johnny walks to the park the next day he sees that the pond is dry, the flowers have died out and the trees has no leafs. Johnny thinks that it is because they haven’t been watered and the pond is run by some kind of water vacuum. Justin approaches Johnny and tells him look at what has happened to this park, the temperature has dried and killed the pond along with the plants. Justin informs Johnny that the world is being damaged by global warming because people don’t recycle or take care of the atmosphere. Twenty minutes later the boys arrive at Johnny’s house and are ready to see their show until it is interrupted by the news station. “Hi good evening residents, we are sorry to inform you that the water supply is toxic and very dangerous to drink, the weather has been extremely out of the ordinary, but we owe it to people’s lack of recycling and care for the atmosphere. Johnny suddenly turns to look at Justin and tells him “wow I have contributed to the destruction of the atmosphere by not disposing of material wastes in the correct manner. Justin I am sorry being so selfish and just caring about my wants and not being informed of how my wants have affected the atmosphere and now the water supply is damaged.” After these words Justin has a look of confusion on his face, because he never thought that Johnny would realize that all his water consumption that had gone to waste is less water that the environment has. Johnny has an idea in which he informs Justin that they should go out and inform the community of how important recycling is, because it will eventually help or hurt the atmosphere.

Education…When, Where, and How to use it, Along with where its Missing

Luis Martinez

K.Volmer

(Education-Looking in)

Education Divided by Two Worlds

Education is a topic of much importance stated in an article by Le Guin which is the “Bryn Mawr Commencement Address”.  This is a very powerful address which strictly aims its view upon the educated ones, or those that attended college. The article starts off by quoting what those who attend college might think of or ask themselves. “Thinking about what I should say to you made me think about what we learn in college; and what we unlearn in college; and then how we learn to unlearn what we learned in college and relearn what we unlearned in college…” This quote clearly states that education is very well needed in order to understand this scholarly address. This address points out the flaws of learning certain things in college that are not necessary and unlearning things that are necessary in the course of life. Education drives people to speak another language and act a different way compared to that of the real world. In society one would not talk in a manner that an essay would be written. Therefore, that is one of the benefactors people who are educated have they can adapt and act accordingly to whatever situation is present and knowing what language and tools are needed in order for the situation to go smoothly.

Therefore, my claim goes hand in hand with this scholarly commencement address. I personally believe that education is very much needed by everyone in this world. Education does not discriminate, in other words meaning that all must have some sort of education so society as a whole can be on the same page. A lack of higher education is present very largely in this country. The manner in which I have seen that there is a lack of education is when one goes to a fancy restaurant and one sees the etiquette of certain individuals or families as a whole. People should act and speak in various manners according to the situation that has been placed in their path.

This country we live in offers a motto like no other country “The land of opportunity and freedom”. Yes, indeed it does state freedom, but that does not mean that people shouldn’t receive education. People should see education as a life builder and enhancer. Education drives many people to accomplish goals and have things that those who aren’t educated do not have. A life enhancer is truly what education has come to be. Those who are highly educated can get along with society and its individual circumstances at any given manner because one has seen the various methods in communicating in those areas.

Furthermore, there are people who are educated but cannot get along with others on new levels because they have chosen just to be one dimensional. What I am offering to be one dimensional is that only one language is spoken and acted by meaning the college language. This language consists of proper English and reasoning only to certain extents. Those extents that are offered are those in which one has be taught to act by.

A native language very much differs from a father tongue or what has been taught by the books to speak in. Most people now in days just use the native language, not the English language that has been taught to them. Therefore, certain communities identify themselves by the language they are use to speaking, such as when I go back home and the neighborhood I reside in is predominantly Hispanic. If I were to talk to a neighbor in the proper English language which we have been taught in college they would freak and give me a face as If I were trying to act as a higher being. In my neighborhood the language spoken is spanglish, which is a mixture of English and Spanish. This is the language they have been taught and is the way in which they communicate with everyone.

Therefore, being educated and being three dimensional is a perfect characteristic that those who attend higher education receive. I have also found to believe that the English language can be very objective, because one does not write as they speak and they are perfectly correlated because they are the correct way of approaching both circumstances.

Who needs recycling?

Sources:

1)      http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/streets/provdrs/san/svcs/recycling.html

2)      http://epa.gov/climatechange/

3)      http://www.help-stop-global-warming.com/global-warming-recycling.html

While searching on the web for reliable resources, I came across three very useful ones. These sources consisted of various links to recycling and climate change topics followed by government incentives and initiatives.

The first source I chose was the city of Chicago and their recycling initiative with the blue bags. I believe this is important because it is a beginning to a cleaner environment for the city.  Furthermore, the city of Chicago and its program have established various guidelines for people to take part in and allow for a better community and earth as a whole. There are various things that people dispose daily that are harmful to the environment especially the ozone layer that must be recycled and thrown away in various facilities that remove the harmful product. Therefore the city of Chicago’s initiative falls into the category of logos due to the fact that they are pointing out the logical way of handling harmful chemicals and wastes.

The second and third source go hand in hand because they point out and show what is happening to the environment and earth as a whole. These two sources are very credible in the way that they are government ran and are based on the earth’s climate change. These sources also follow various pathos examples because they discuss and persuade one to recycle and take care of emissions and such things that are harmful.

The world indeed needs a change, and the way in which people and communities can contribute is by recycling, driving fuel efficient cars and using natural un-harmful products. To conclude this…I propose for everyone to start recycling.

A Different World…What’s a Portal…

First thing that came to mind when this assignment had been appointed was “Pointless…I can care less about blogging about what other people talk about, I don’t have time for this.” But then I realized wow, these posts aren’t just reading about emotions or what someone is bragging about, they are real situations that happen to people like you and me. Therefore, my perspective had changed I was motivated in doing this assignment and reading what others have gone through. I navigated through the Tracks in The Sand and I was very surprised by the posts under the portal “Brainy Gamer”. The first thing I thought this was going to be another one of those weird stories, kind of like the Vagina Monologues. Good thing it turned out to be about people blogging about video games, but what caught my attention was the post by “Michael Abbott” titled under “Crime of opportunity”. This post was about a small house inIndianabeing robbed and they had been striped of their video game consoles and Mac notebook. The most important thing I seen in this post was about how people responded to the post on Twitter. Many comments had been left where people offered ways in which these possessions could be recovered. Some other people shared stories about how they had experienced robberies and burglaries. What most surprised me was that the writer went on through the post saying…

“They ignored our flat-screen TV, stereo system, a 3DS in a case sitting next to the Mac book, and my Wii with controllers nearby. Feel free to joke about ‘left-behind hardware’ in the comments section. I’m ready for some levity. :-)

The detective called this a “crime of opportunity,” which he explained as a crime committed without planning or premeditation. A perpetrator discovers he has a chance to act and seizes it, in most cases taking advantage of the owner’s carelessness.”

I had felt remorse for this writer expressing what he had gone through in a manner where he seemed cheerful and very optimistic.

Another thing that caught my attention was this post…

“Lets play a game together. We’ll call this game “Guess the Score.” Before we begin, let me warn you that I will win this game. Don’t get discouraged. In the end we both lose.”   Michael Abbott It’s a   B+ World

I interpreted this post very different; I saw it as life and its venues. Life is very tricky and has a lot of bumps along the way. Therefore, you the reader of this blog interpret it as you wish too.
